Recording Requirements

Only those documents prescribed by California law may be recorded. A reference manual of recordable documents is available for public use in our office.

  • The recorder is responsible for accepting all documents that meet recording requirements.
  • The recorder may not give legal advice, assist you in the preparation of documents or counsel when and if to record a document
  • If you need assistance preparing a document, you must seek your own legal counsel.
  • The recorder’s office does not sell blank forms, however as a courtesy some forms are available online. The Clerk/Recorder's office cannot advise which form to use or how to fill them out, for help you should seek legal advice. Most stationery stores also carry blank forms.
