General Information

Persons under 18 years of age, emancipated minors included, cannot be licensed to marry in California without a Superior Court order.

When applying for a Marriage License each individual will have to provide the following information:

  • Father's Full Birth Name
  • Father's State or Foreign Country of Birth
  • Mother's Full Birth Name
  • Mother's State or Foreign Country of Birth
  • How an individual's previous marriage ended and the marriage end date (if applicable)

If you are recently divorced and it has been 6 months or less, you are required by our office to present a certified copy of the divorce decree for verification that the marriage has been legally dissolved.

The marriage license will be void if there are any alterations, erasures, strikeovers, or correction fluids on the document.

No particular form for the ceremony of marriage is required, except that the parties shall declare, in the presence of the person solemnizing the marriage and necessary witnesses, that they take each other as lawful spouses.

There are no state or country residency or blood test requirements.

Civil wedding ceremonies are performed in our office by appointment only with at least a 24 hours advance notice. Since our wedding schedule fills up fast, you should make your appointment as soon as possible. You will need to bring at least one witness when the ceremony takes place. Effective January 1, 2010, per AB 130, H&S code 102230 (b) (5) regular(nonconfidential) marriage records became confidential. You must be an "authorized" person in order to purchase a certified copy.

Although confidential marriages are not public documents, anyone may request the county clerk to perform a search of the confidential marriage indices, for the purpose of confirming the existence or non-existence of a marriage. The date of the marriage and other information in the certificate shall not be disclosed except upon order of the court (Family Code, Sec 511).

A ceremony that is performed with a Confidential Marriage License; no witness is required by law.
