How to File

In the on going effort to maintain costs and services, the Yolo County Clerk-Recorder asks that all documents requests to be mailed to the customer include a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope. In Lieu of the Self Addressed Stamped Envelope the customer may elect to pay $1.00 for return postage which will be added to the document fee total.

FBN Statements may be filed in person or by mail. Only ORIGINAL FBN Statements will be processed. FAXES and/or PHOTOCOPIES are NOT acceptable. Once your statement has been filed with the County Clerk/Recorder and you have been issued certified copies, NO changes, additions, or corrections may be made to this statement. If any alterations need to be made, you will need to file a NEW statement and pay the filing fee.

To file an FBN Statement:

  • Search the Yolo County Clerk/Recorder's Fictitious Business Name Index. It is the responsibility of the registrant to conduct a search of this index to assure the availability of the FBN in this county. You may search the FBN Index online for your convenience or view the official index in the Clerk/Recorder office.
  • Complete an FBN Statement.
  • Complete all six (6) items on the form:
    • Place of Business and Registrant(s) require a physical address be listed (You may include a P.O. Box for mailing address only).
    • Business Classification must be completed.
    • Beginning Date of Business requires today’s date or a past date (If the date is in the future, mark it N/A).
    • Requires you to sign and print your name.
  • FBN forms may be downloaded from this website or are available in our office. You should mail or take the completed application to the Clerk/Recorder office and pay the appropriate fee for filing.FBN Statements may be filed in person or by mail. Only ORIGINAL FBN Statements will be processed. FAXES and/or PHOTOCOPIES are NOT acceptable.
  • You will receive three(3) certified copies of your statement:
    • One copy for the customer’s record
    • One copy for the bank (if you choose to open a business bank account)
    • One copy for publishing in a newspaper
  • It is every person’s responsibility to publish one of his or her certified copies with a general-circulation newspaper located in Yolo County at the time of filing your FBN statement.

Once registered the FBN Statement is effective for five (5) years.

When applying by mail please include:

  • Fee in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Yolo County Clerk/Recorder or the Credit Card Charge Form
  • Daytime phone number
  • Self Addressed Stamped Envelope for return mailing or pay the "In Lieu of Self Addressed Stamped Envelope" fee of $1.00 .
