Fictitious Business Names How to File

FBN Statements may be filed in person or by mail. Once your statement has been filed with the County Clerk/Recorder and you have been issued certified copies, NO changes, additions, or corrections may be made to this statement. If any alterations need to be made, you will need to file a NEW statement and pay the filing fee.
To file an FBN Statement in Person:
When filing in person please be sure to do the following:
- Search the Yolo County Clerk/Recorder's Fictitious Business Name Index (Not applicable if you are filing a FBN Abandonment or FBN Withdrawal Statement). You may search the FBN Index online.
- Complete an FBN Statement.
- FBN forms may be downloaded from this website. You may enter the necessary information, and present the completed application, and the appropriate fee, to the county clerk for filing.
- The clerk will then give you a receipt and three (3) certified copies of your statement:
- One copy for the customers record
- One copy for the bank (if you choose to open a business bank account)
- One copy for publishing in a newspaper
- It is every persons responsibility to publish one of his or her certified copies with a general-circulation newspaper located in Yolo County.
Once registered the FBN Statement is effective for (5) years.
To file a FBN Statement by Mail:
To file your FBN Statement by mail please make sure to do the following:
- Search the FBN Index online.
- Fill out and print the appropriate FBN form.
- Complete all six (6) items on the form:
- Place of Business and Registrant(s) require a physical address be listed (You may include a P.O. Box).
- Business Classification must be completed.
- Beginning Date of Business requires todays date or a past date (If the date is in the future, mark it N/A).

- Enclose the appropriate fees and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
- You will receive three (3) certified copies of your statement and a receipt in the mail:
- One copy for your records
- One copy for the bank (if you choose to open a business bank account)
- One copy for publishing in a newspaper

Once registered the FBN Statement is effective for (5) years.
